I can't run an extension cord from my dorm to my car, so I bought a pencil butane torch.  This will melt the solder with ease, but so will a $0.99 lighter.  What are the benefits of one over the other?  Any other options?

Thanks,
Matt

Matt!
With due respect: why don't you make a small comparison-experiment and report back? You will be surprised!
Absolutely no offence intended!  :D

Dude, you build stompboxes in your car?  That's hardcore

Just kidding, I saw those too at the hardware store (brand name Solder-It), and picked one up when they went on sale.  They'll do the trick in a pinch, but it's hard to work in tight spaces with lots of components close by.  They're better than a lighter though, because the flame is hotter and will shoot wherever you point it.  Also, you don't have to hold that tab down and burn your thumb.

I much prefer an iron, preferably one with adjustable temperature.  One thing the torch is great for is shrink tubing, though.  Just play it quickly back and forth and you're golden.

I bought one of those torches (that actually has a lighter in it) - I use it solely for shrink tube.  It is better than a lighter because it is directional whereas a lighter flame is somewhat random.  My shrink tube used to always end up burned and black, now it's nice and neat.  However, as was pointed out, for components, the torches/lighters are too broad for soldering.  If you're wiring up your car's stereo, the torch will be good.

I think that propane soldering irons can be purchased as well though.....

buy a 12V soldering iron. Find them at auto accessory shops.

My ISO-Tip cordless/rechargeable is wonderful, and ready to solder in less than ten seconds.
