hello 12!
let me get this straight.
in 1995 or 1996 you built,or set up a les paul style guitar.
you put a used a string on it, in 95/96.
it, the string finaly broke today at 5:15
which makes the string over 8 years old.

is this correct?
where are you at?
if you put a new ( less than 8 year old string on there you would probably lose your mind, the differance in tone is amazing! in all my years of punk/ hardcore i've never had a string over 3 months.
And  after that much time/sweat/ stretch, that string was for all practical purposes "cashed" after 8 hours of use, I can't even imagine 8 years!
p.m. me , i'll send you a set or two

As you get more gunk on a string it loses some of the metallic sound and "mellows out" - loses a lot of high-end content.

Some people grow to like that. I go months between changing strings, and since something about my body chemistry dirties them up pretty quickly, my amp, equalizer, pedals, etc are actually set up for that mellower sound :). I changed strings before jamming with some friends last year and was unable to use my strat's bridge pickup without re-EQing.

At home this summer, I've been using my brother's Squier Affinity Strat... not such a great guitar but the strings are stock from 2-3 years ago. They still sound relatively new, but then again he's played it for maybe an hour or two total. So it has to be the blood, sweat and tears affecting the sound... literally.
