hello casey
I feel your pain, believe me I do!
check out the beginer section here at aron's
or search for the bass fuzz or the bazz fuss ( all parts available at radio shack)
or the range master ( including any "treble boost" you can find)
and when you got them nailed, let me know! cuz i can't get any of them to sound good enough to box up! (boxes are expensive!)
i'm only kidding, they are all real nice projects.
tons o' fun and tons o' tones!

A good idea would be to check the stickies on the beginner project forum.  It has detailed instructions on how to build a simple booster and was the first project for many of us.

A fuzz face is a very simple circuit, you will need to know how to read and understand schematics before you attempt to build it though, as well as having a soldering iron and all the parts.

www.muzique.com has a NPN fuzz face schematic in the projects section among other things.
www.geofex.com has alot of good information if you would like to learn more
www.smallbearelec.com is the easiest place to buy parts for these projects
