The Distortion+ has always been one of my favourite effects for bass guitar, so I decided to give the very similar DOD250 a whirl with the discrete op-amp to see how it'd sound.  The verdict?  It sounds great!  Plenty of honk with my p-bass.  

Some extra changes I made were lowering the resistor in the gain control to 2K2 and increasing the cap to 0.1uF to crank up the gain a bit.  Another change was using a metal can 2N2222 instead of the 2N5089.  This seemed to improve the definition of the pick attack quite a bit...I guess because of the lower gain?  I'll have to dig up some 2907s to use for the PNPs.

Anyhow, I just thought I'd post the schem in case anyone else wants to try it out.  There are still a lot of tweaks I want to try out, but this schem is a good starting point.

lol...I just realised that I made one substitution to raise the amount of gain, and then another that possibly lowered it.   :oops:

Looks cool.  Next thing on my list to try.  Looks like there are several resistors in the signal path you could reduce by a factor of 10.  Check out R.G.'s suggestion for the feedback loop, below.  

I did try putting the two 100K resistors and a 0.1uF that RG suggested in place of the 1M resistor in the feedback loop, but it didn't really sound much different.  Perhaps it'd be more noticeable at higher volumes.
