How about a DIY stompbox WIKI?

Anyone else think a WIKI focusing on DIY stompbox topics would be a good idea? It could be sort of a freeform FAQ that anyone could contribute to. I personally would think of it as a mix between an archive of the best posts and a living, breathing, FAQ file - another great resource for newbies.

Considering the diverse user base of this forum, it could easily expand from just stompbox stuff to include a LOT more.

I thought about this as soon as I read about a wiki. The only problem is that anyone can damage and destroy the Wiki right?

What's to stop someone from going in and wiping it out?

Where is it hosted?

Andy

nah.  I like this MUCH better.  it would be cool, however, to be able to contribute some sort of FAQ here.  It could consist of topics.  anyone who had something to contribute would send it either to aron for posting or direct posting into the proper topic.

Example.  the topic is enclosure finishing.  Everyone with ideas would contribute their experiences to it.  I could submit ideas I have discovered to work and not work for me.  NO questions asked in the topic just tutorials, hints, suggestions etc.

the topic is PCB making.  experienced persons would give their hand in that as far as print methods, paper types they use, iron temps.

the topic is layout design....you get the idea.

aron, if you're not interested in such an idea, I would be MORE than happy to host something on one of my servers here.  I have web, ftp and dns servers to use and nothing to do with them!!!

Check out this link for info on some wiki packages:

After a cursory look over the packages above, it looks like all that is needed is a server with php or perl. I could host it on my site at school, but will have to check to see what services we are offered. I think we only get some simple cgi scripts.

I'm pretty sure there is a 'revision history' feature in some of the releases so you can figure out what changes were made and by whom (and reverse any damage), though I could be wrong. As with anything out there on the net, it would need some sort of moderation to keep some doofus from screwing it up, though several sites i've seen haven't had too many problems (see http://wiki.etree.org/ , http://www.diyaudio.com/wiki/ ) and have produced some pretty good alternatives to static FAQs.

Having some kind of an idea how to cop certain sounds of fav. artists would be useful. Using a list of topstars and winning combinations and at least having some kind of idea of how to get that certain sound, guitar pedals[min. chain, with max. tone] and which pedal did you use. Not necessarily another guitar geek but a very scaled down version using what one has or has built. What they use live / what bands they cover etc. You know people from this forum that are familiars and whoever joins of course.

I could create another forum that would be just FAQ articles.

But is this really better than a FAQ file like we had before?

Andy

not really another forum of FAQ's but something that is more moderated to cut out questions.  That way, for reference.

I like the idea of having a page of who-used-what.  That sounds like a great idea!!

Well, I checked out that link and a few clicks later ended up on a page about having sex with dolphins. I knew I should have turned left at  Albuquerque.
