Looks great ! But before anyone starts building it .. Wouldn't it be a good idea to do this in close collaboration ?

One to etch the boards, one to soldeer the boards, one to drill the cases, etc.

How 'bout that ? ;)

Thomas Henry has been designing great stuff for over 20 years, some of them with Jack Orman as a partner.  Although the design you link to a a good one, the SAD-4096 is VERY hard to find (having been out of production for close to 20 years), and VERY expensive when you find it.  I'm still not quite sure why Thom has it posted, unless he is sitting on a stash of them, or unless he simply never got around to taking it down.

On the other hand, the portion of the circuit found here: http://www.midwest-analog.com/graphics/schmdel3.gif
is still quite buildable and quite relevant.  If one could adapt/redraw the board to accommodate an MN3005 or 3205, which though rare are still more obtainable than a 4096, the project would be more feasible.

I think it's pretty safe to say that doing an analog delay in large quantities would be a very hard venture, in terms of getting the parts.  A flanger, or a chorus, on the other hand, would be easier, because 3207 and 3102s are readily available all over the net, plus, visualsound is remaking them.  Once you get 4096 stages, though, it's not so easy.  However, if you have a 1024 stage with a clock tolerance that allows for 4 seconds of delay, that's another story  8)

I have built this and it's wonderful!  In fact, just had to fix it (the 4041 chip buggered). I'm also lucky enough to have a spare 4096, thanks to a guy named Jason Munoz.

It was one HELL of a build. I did it pretty much verbatim to Tom's (19" rack panel).  I got sick of looking at shielded cable for a while!

I did look that over when Paul Perry recently posted a link to them (midwest-analog). I simply adore Analog Delay, and it is a pretty integral part of my sound. I use an 80s era stompbox (KMD), but would love to have a nice unit with the added feature of modulation. It's really a shame it's become such a rarified beast. Here's hoping some football field sized warehouse of NOS BBD chips gets discovered. I would need a pretty idiotproof project kit-wise if I were to consider the DIY route though. I always fantasize about a world where quality analog delays are as plentiful as *MEGAEXTREMENUMETALSHITINANALUMIMUMBOX* pedals.
