So, I've decided to make my own knows. I'm making moulds and I'm using resin that i can color as well. It looks very nice. I'm making some copies of old knobs from radios etc.

I'd like to make them with a 6 mm push on shaft, so I dont have to drill a hole in the side for a set screw. Does anyone know if its possible to buy the 6mm push part? I would like to drill a hole in the bottom and glue the push shaft into place so it makes a nice 6mm hole.

I dont know where to look for on google. Preferably some kind of metal (material not music)

any ideas. i know i can just buy cheap knobs and take the part out.. but thats not really what im after.

Why not just mold the 18 tooth spline/knurl? That's how they're made commercially.

that "brass part" is the collet and nut in a collet knob. sifam and alma make the knobs, dunno bout spares.

Thats true.. i can mold them even with a pot shaft inside, but the placing, depth etc would be critical.

Thonk in the UK sell these set-screw brass inserts:

I'm sure there must be other vendors selling the same thing?

I have seen a knob for an antique radio being 3-D printed at one meeting of the London Vintage Radio Club.  This seems to offer a lot of promise for rare or hard-to-get knobs but the process takes over an hour for even a small knob.  Plaster mold casting may be competitive and I have one book on the subject:

How to Cast Small Metal and Rubber Parts by William A. Cannon

It is a small book but it covers investment (lost wax) casting, die casting, permanent mold casting, plaster casting and shell mold casting.  It has chapters on molding with a defective pattern and molding with a metal insert.  Some of it will be applicable to casting plastic and there are some casting resins that can be used in the same manner.
