LM 317>which way's up?

The pinout that came with it I'm 1/2 assuming they were looking at the lettering with the transistor laid down, but there's no real way to see from the diagram that they didn't have it letters down...
 The only pinouts I've seen with the tranny laid down were with the letters up so...Ill check back after afew and see if
  Is there some way to identify the Vin,  Adjust, and Vout pins on the LM317?

    Holding the regulator with lettering facing you and the legs pointing down        from left to right:  Adjust,  V out/tab,  V in

And the voltage kept falling [sctually about two seconds] Pretty hott
 Stuck it in the other way Vin Adj Vout letters facing me and getting wonderful readings at around 9.32v and less!!! Thats' with a ~13v battery
