adding a gain pot?

How do you figure out where to put a pot for gain, i have a volume one, but what to beable to change the gain.  And what value?  If its possible,

What type of distortion, transistor-based, opamp-based? If its opamp you'll often find the gain control in the feedback loop of one of the opamp stages (between the output, pin 1 or 7 if its a 741type pinout, and one of the inputs, pin 2,3,5, or 6).

You could also put a volume pot before the gain circuit.
