Ts-808 without diodes? still worked..why?

I forgot i took my diodes out to use in another effect i was working on so when i plugged the ts808 in and played through it still worked..Why..didnt sound all that bad..

The signal can't go lower than 0V (ground) or higher than 9V(supply).  In fact, with an old RC4558 chip in it, it'd be lucky to go as low as 2V and as high as 7V.  So you still get clipping, just a volt or two higher and lower than with the diodes.  Tho I am surprised that the clipping is musical.  My experiences with lack-of-headroom clipping in op-amps (by deliberately mis-biasing them) is that it's not very musical.

yeah, i tried building a 4558 fuzz on bread board.  it sounded terrible, but maybe since the TS cuts so much bass it might not be that bad, but i can immagine it would sound good.
