Spec Wise, whats the difference between a 4558 and a 4559?  I have a bunch of 4558s (around ten extra), and want to know if there's any reason I cant use either of them.

the 9 might have been a wider freq. response versoin of the 8, or something like that. Have you tried Googling for datasheets?

I ran a test some time ago on a Badstone phaser. I tried SSM 2135, 4558, 4558, TLO22, TLO62, TLO72 and a few more I've forgotten - the result was no difference between any of them soundwise, and very little noisewise.

In a distortion, they are about the same, maybe the 4559 is a little more    solid, but pretty close.

alright, because like i said i have both, and they seem to be identical.  The only reason I switched from an 8 to a 9 in my amp was because the 8 in it looked pretty messed up and cheap.

It's very funny you should mention this...I've got several silver painted JRC 4559's, but when I google specs, they show up as CMOS chips! Haven't tried them in a stompbox yet. Maybe when I build that TS-808

The 4559 has slightly better noise characteristics... but unlikely you'd hear the difference, especially in a guitar pedal!

Also, 4559 consumes less power.
