I recently put the millennium bypass on my breadboard to test the parts I planned to use.  I'm using the right resistor values, and a 1N914 Diode.  For the Jfet I'm using an NTE312 and finally the LED is the yellow one from radio shack(276-351).  To simulate the switch, I took a wire from the Gate to the ground.  When I do this, the led switches off, but the Jfet immediatly gets hot and starts smoking.  Should I try a diffrent Jfet.  I've checked the build twice, and everything is as it should be.

If it's smoking it's toast and isn't functioning properly!

Yes, replace it, but try and find out what caused it to smoke in the first place before you do!

Whenever I smoke a fet, it's the pinout.   FWIW.

Same here...though I can't help feeling woodbines would be smoother on the throat!
