okay, i have built an IC based muff fuzz and love that sound so i am currently building the transistorized version but {here it comes} the schematic (look down there) specifies NPN 2N5088 transistors which i am unable to get. in fact the nearest thing i have is NPN 2N5551. now im guessing i cant just plug those into the circuit and it will sound great but can i change the circuit so it will accept these ones and sound anywhere near decent?

just get some 2n5089's

Or 2N3904, it's more common, I think. But 2n3904 has less hfe than 2N5088 or 2n5089.

You may also try other NPN.

Use any high gain NPN, like the BC549C.

hey man,
i had some trouble with the 5088's too, but if you try maplin electronics, I know they have them, as I have had quite a few 5088's from them. Also have you tried R.S components, they have loads of transistors ( sorry if I kinda advertised there, I wont do it again). good luck. there are many components not really available in the uk, so dont be surprised if you cant find a certain one, just order it from smallbear ( again sorry)

Rules broken? I sure didn't see any.   This place is fairly short on rules.

I think in general anything that brings more business to SmallBear is a great thing and any help that anybody can give to find components is just as good.

Links to suppliers are always welcome and appreciated too.

Mentioning a supplier is absolutely not against the rules! Spamming is but what you did isn't spamming, just saying 'you can get that there'. There's no harm in that, to the contrary, it's useful
