 Maybe the owner of the mail address does not know what his/hers computer is doing... and he she is not the only one

Nasty worms are movin around, sick evil stuff...
Only little small cute bug and it can send thousands of seeds...

But I quess ANY longtime member / frequent user / circuit junkie of this forum is happy to know is his computer is sending unwanted things.

Well,I'm happy my computer is not infected but still makes me leary of what's going on.
Also if peolple are asking for free samples remember that if you do you probably become part of a database that has millions of addresses,I don't know if that's the case but sounds logic to me it could spread like that also.

 I seriously wonder why all these hackers do this kind of sh*t. I mean, no-one is gaining anything and you can't go around bragging "I wrote the myDoom virus!" so what's the point? Just some computer nerd who thinks he's better than the rest of the world... Hackers are total assholes...
I don't like Holland. Nobody has the transistors I want.

Nasse

:? Yeah I sometimes got a "free" e-mail address just for purpose so I could dumb the address if I am buried under junk mail like advertisements and endless special orders or penis enlargement/viagra ads, maybe they are safer too if you change mail with a stranger

Ben,
Quoteyou can't go around bragging "I wrote the myDoom virus!"
hackers, crackers, phreakers, breakers and whatever they like to call each other DO brag about it. The just don't do it in places like this.

Nasse,
Quotesometimes got a "free" e-mail address just for purpose
I have done the same thing, and ended up with 7 different emails   ...well, I 'actually' have a separate use for each, but that's difficult to track.

Aharon, the idea behind all these worms, is not that 'people' send it to you. They get sent by themselves. Technicaly speaking, most of them has their own mail server embedded, so once a computer get's infected, the worm looks for the address book, and resends itself as an attachment to everyone in that address book. So probably it was not intentional that you got that mail.

I use norton antivirus, and succesfully detects and removes about 10 infected emails every day! Many other software will work as well. Just make sure you update yout virus definitions daily.

Good Luck

check the IP addreses!...sometimes the viruses that are sent around "steals" someone elses addres and makes it look like someone who is in reallity not sending you virusmail gets the blame...
...we've had that problem in the company I work for. a lot of people got virus mails with mail addreses from us, but when we check the IP's it was clearly coming from somewhere else...

..also, I saw the other day you where conserned that sometimes after posting here, you get viruses...perhaps you could use double identitys...log in under another name...it would be really sad if thats needed, but just to make sure...

DON'T PANIC

Aharon

Well,I will not post under another name, thanks for the suggestion tho'.
I will change my email and that's it.
I have protection that's why I'm not infected and I also know that visuses self propagate that's why i asked fellow DIYers to erase my address from your books if you have me.That's all.
I'm going to say it again,it happens in a flurry after certain discussions,I don't know what causes it and don't know if it's related.Just a wild guess.

I didn't use to get any spam or virii back in the day, and then I by mistake posted my eMail on a newsgroup and was thus @#$%ed.  I was virus free for maybe a year or two.  Just don't post your email address in a common place, and when you're signing up for things, don't check the box that says "Check this box for updates."

Now you're making me feel really old . "Back in the day" I was removing viruses from machines when you were less then 2 years old. ;) 'Good' old nVIR...

As Johan stated, the address that it says it came from is meaningless. Now with XP allowing the creation of totally raw Ethernet packets you can't even trust the IP in the headers, but for the moment the IP is still the only way to get closer to the source.

You're barking up the wrong tree partner, your paranoia about the members of this forum is unjustified. Changing your eMail address and removing it from here will not help you at all. As long as you have an email address, you will receive virus' by email, it's just a fact of life. If I have something to say to anyone here that I don't want others to hear, I will P.M.

Thanks you for stating the obvious.I'm not being paranoid I was just warning fellow members and bringing up a legitimate concern but I guess you felt your wisdom was needed.
Who was talking about P.M.?
I can't believe how people will twist what one said,I'm not accussing anybody.

hey Aharon (b.t.w.: are you the "A.C." at ampage?):
I may have caused some reason for flaming here (unwillingly, though...),
but haven`t gotten any "wrong mails", that "McAfee" would have told me of, anyway...

The Tone God

These macro viri that use email address books to both send and forge addresses make it almost impossible to track the source. The only thing you can really do is email everyone that you know has your address and let them know that they need to scan their machine. Even then you may not know everyone that has your address as it could have been passed on without you knowing.

I have a few personal addresses that I give ONLY directly to people and use for person to person communication. I don't post it publicly anywhere. For eveything else I have a bunch of throw away addresses or forwarding addresses that I can delete. Anywhere I need to post, sign up, or in anyway give an address I use one of the throw away accounts. Keeps the spam at bay and lessens the chance of me getting a virus in my good mail accounts. When I get one at a good account I send out a email to all the members of that address.

Back in the day I was AC at Ampage ( Not A.C. but we are talking 4/5 years ago).
I also let everybody know that I changed to Aharon or A Colman on the old profile before Aron moved to this format. That's old news and should not cause flaming.
The people that count have known me for years and know who and what I'm all about.

I have an idea   !!!!

let's see...these viruses look in your address book...well, what if we all had a few 'wrong' addresses in our books?. I mean, if you actually get infected, at least you won't propagate as much of it, 'cause some isp don't let wrong formatted email through.

I'm not sure if I'm making sense....you know, I'm thinking out loud. Just that.

Make a few entries in your books, like:

name: a
last name: a
email: a@a.notavaliddomainname

so it will be sorted out first, but as .notavaliddomainname is indeed *not a valid domain name* the server *might* stop sending mails.

At my last job, when you sent an email to several people, and one address was wrong, then nobody got the email, till I fixed the miss spelled address.

It all depends on the mail server..... some of them will give bounce notices for each invalid address and send to the rest.

The best protection is to just not use Outlook on an Intel/AMD PC. Aside from that.... maybe adding an additional character to the address would be a good way to go (i.e. address@diystompboxes.comz). Manually removing that final 'z' will prevent the use of the address book.

Oh well.

Take care,

About a month ago I was getting about three viruses sent to me a day for a period of about two weeks.  One of them was always a fake update from Microsoft and the others claimed to be unsendable emails being returned, I think the virus was called A-something.  It was really making me paranoid for a while there but has since stopped.  I think maybe they got my address off of monster.com.

I've always wondered if viruses originate from software companies - creating a problem and then selling you the solution.
