I found a bunch of boards at work that have one of each of these. I think we upgraded a system and just threw the old parts in a box. What could these be used for?

2N3053 (TO-5)
M8830 (DIP-8 )(National?) I think this may be LM88 dual remote-diode temperature sensor

2N3053 general purpose NPN Ic=700mA

Uses?  Take your pick!  It's fairly generic.  Search this forum for the part no. and you'll get some inspiration!

IME they're very grainy and noisy maybe due to the case style...but some folks may love 'em! I tried them in FF's and TB's
