The famous Orange Squeezer compressor is being reissued through Vintage Tone Project under the name of the Orange Crusher and is going to retail for $179 apparently.

Looks like another 'Vintage Reissue' with 'improvements in tone and reliablility' over the original i.e. Switchcraft jacks, and a 3PDT switch for true bypass.

Not bad for about $25 worth of parts!!!

wasn't the Way Huge Saffron Squeeze an Orange Squeezer copy?  If you can find one it would probably cost about $300.

Last time i looked WD Music was knocking out Dan Armstrong pedal reissues at about $79 ....

Hey BB

I just saw the VTP product on ebay for $109 ... they say there normal price is $149.

Sure they go on with a bunch of hoodoo about 4558D chips and gold chip sockets ... lol they even talk about an 'carbon zinc battery' like that's good or something.

But let's give 'em a break, it's a low volume industry, they've got all kinds of overheads (like their website) and they have to maintain their product through a warranty product of 2 years .... besides they're offering a service, the typical musician doesn't (really) know anything about electronics, they just want something that sounds good and is reliable and maybe is good for their image as professional musicians.  If they can still sell something that you and I could build in a night and make a decent profit, good on 'em.

That's what capitalism and living in the land of the free is all about, right?

The asian sweatshops get $2 for each pair of Nike shoes the kids sew up, plus there is $5 or so  of 'components'not counting advertising. I doubt Nike will be switching to the lucrative pedal business any time soon :D

aron

This is a real Dan Armstrong pedal!

Go Dan go!!!!

I wonder if he's utilizing the other half of the OA for anything. Or has he been lurking around here? A true guitar & amp & effect legend!!

LOL ... I was going to say they should look at getting them made in China - that'll get they're overheads down for sure, I'm sure the savings in labour costs will more than offset the cost of freight ;-)

Now I really laugh when I see the 4558D hyped as a mojo device in THIS pedal! I can't blame them for using them in a business sense, but in audio terms it is hardly the epitome of sonic excellence in this circuit. I am glad there is an at least decent version of this device commercially though, as I think it is really a useful *meat&potatoes* device. If they socket the IC so you can pop a  Burr-Brown 2604 in there, I'd be impressed!

but you can!  the ebay item I saw talked about gold plated IC sockets, so you could Burr-Brown away to your heart's content!

You do have to laugh though at the hype about 4558D's in non-distorting pedals like this one and jap black-label CE-2's .... the only justification for the 4558D's rep is that they were used in TS-808s and TS-9s

petemoore

I think 4558's sound thick...I guess that could be called distortion?
For the OS I would think very clean would be the opt to go for chip wise.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

You said it Aron.  Dan seems like a super nice guy and I hope he does well with this reissue.  Best of luck, Dan.
