If your experience is as you describe it, a univibe might be a bit of a tall order for a first time out.  I'm not suggesting for one minute it would be impossible for you to build one in the not too distant future, but the number of potential sources of trouble and trouble-shooting for a first-timer will keep you busy for months to come.  The damn thing stands a high likelihood of just sitting there on your bench/desk and taunting you until, say October this year.  In short, getting over the initial hurdles of building just *something* and getting it to work, getting the hang of a few things, and THEN moving on to a more ambitious project like a univibe, may well end up taking the same amount of time overall, and deliver up more goodies and toys AND chops for you.  In this neck of the woods, chops will get you more toys every time.
