So I followed someone's advice here (don't remember whose!) and emailed Paul Crowther. (builder of Crowther pedals.) I've heard rave reviews of his hotcake and prunes&custard pedals so I got one of each.

He offered them to me at a good price including shipping (from NZ!) and saved me the trouble of having to go thru a dealer and pay markup, so if any of you are looking for one of these pedals, drop him a note. Purportedly the hotcake uses a TL071 in some weird configuration including doing something with the compensation pin, I dunno about that. Nobody I've talked to knows what's going on with the P&C though, so I'm eager to try it out. Supposedly a controllable amount of IM distortion? Mmmm.

I love both of those pedals. The P&C sounds unlike anything I've heard so I can't even begin to figure out exactly what it's doing. I would agree that it's messing with i/m distortion. It has neat "filtery" effects as the note decays.

The Hot Cake is known to sound great with Vox amps. I also love it with Fenders. It's a very transparent sounding drive - it doesn't murk up the tone like a TS can. It sounds like your amp, just bigger.

I LOVE my P&C.  I love to come home after a crappy day at work, turn up my bass amp, crank up the P&C and annoy the neighbours!

From another thread - croth@clear.net.nz  - that the address?

How good a deal did he lay on you?

That E-mail looks right.  I have gotten 2 Hotcakes from Paul. He charges $125 shipped for a Hotcake.

US Dollars or  New Zealand?

That's USD and shipping is included. That is a VERY GOOD DEAL.

The email you have above is correct.

Quick update (I'm bad about remembering):

I got the hotcake and P&C. The hotcake is an incredible deal, it's easily the nicest pedal out of anything I've built or bought. Instead of sounding overdrivey or distorty, it just sounds GOOD. An extremely smooth sound, with a very pleasing "presence" control... very controlled, responsive distortion.

The P&C is a mean and growly thing and I haven't gotten to play with it much but it's like a combination overdriven-envelope-filter and bass-range distortion, which goes all the way to total chaos hash when you turn the drive up.

I recorded a bass track with the P&C yesterday and it turned out quite well, the end result was a somewhat-compressed bass sound which was thick without the mud and somewhat dubby.

My four cents...
