I want to build brown sound i a box but I cant get
J201 Fets here in this part of the Philippines.

can J202 be a direct substitute to J201?

will it makes any sound difference?

Mike Burgundy

On and off ratings are higher and more widespread on a 202, but otherwise theyre similar. Most small-signal FETs should at least work - although you might have to tweak a resistor or two.
Get them and stick em in, see what happens. Start with a simple single stage booster, so you can really see what's going on and not get flustered by a lot of components.

It will sound different.

The J202 has a higher transconductance (double that of the J201), a wider range of Vgs(off) and a higher zero G-S voltage drain current.

But it will probably work, if not order the J201s.

im pretty sure Steve from Small Bear Electronics will ship J201's to you!

Even living in the US, I cant buy them locally.  The Rat Shack stoped stocking them some time ago, or so i hear....

Please be reminded that I live in a third world country where
ordering online is considered a luxury.
Maybe someone can ship me some for free...nah I'm just wishful thinking.

Hey crawler486

Im from th Philippines too!!! so I know what you mean. We just have to be extra resourceful hehe.

Ive been substituting J202s for J201s and i havent experienced any problems. I mean they seem to react to biasing in the same way. Havent heard any difference.

I get my Jfets from alexan. theyre 35 bucks a pop

Wheres your part of town? Maybe we can hook up and play through some of your stompboxes?

Yeah, that's right. It is actually 35 pesos, not $35 as others might think. P56 = $1. Crawler is somewhere in the region III. I think there's a nearby Alexan to him.

Ejbasses or anyone, have you tried J202 in runoffgroove amp emulations?
Oh yeah!

deeco sells j201s but they currently have none in their inventory.  they're selling it for PhP 600 each (~USD 10)

Hey slide, are you too from the 'Pinas? :D

P600 each  ???!! in deeco??? I can already make two high-gain fuzz pedals for that price  . The amount may not be that much for the two pedals i can make

aba dumadami pinoy dito ah!

havent built any ROG amp sims yet. Buying 1 jfet plus parts is okay on the pocket but buying 4 or 5 plus passive components is kinda hard on the pocket.

im thinking of building an amp sim from ROG to use as a preamp on a 2X12 im planning to build. comments?

BTW what part of town are you from slide?

I knew another pinoy here. rx5 is his name here if I'm not mistaken. He's from Leyte, if I remember right. He's earlier than I in registering in this cool forum.

One of these days, I'll build one of ROG's amp emulations. The one that can give the most screaming lead out of my Big Muff, Sansamp Gt2 and Multiface.

4-5 j202, P35 x 5 = P175. Enough to bust my pocket  .
Oh yeah!

I dont mean to hijack the thread or anything, but other than being really hot, what is the philipines like... i was always under the impression that it was fairly well developed like singapore.  Not that I'm comparing it to singapore.... i think you guys dont like them much??!?!?!

What is it like there?

You're right about you're impression that it's fairly developed country but not I think to be compared to Singapore.

The Philippines is actually has a great potential to be among the top countries in Asia like Japan or Singapore. The Philippines is in a strategic location for trade and logistics, it has a vast natural resources with it's 7,000 islands, a close US ally, the best English-speaking country in Asia, etc. Unfortunately, government corruption and inefficiency, poor or inadequate management or utilization of resources due to lack of machinery and funding, sometimes, people aren't disciplined enough, peace and order problem etc. are some things that have prevented our country from moving away from being a third world country.

On the good side, we Filipinos are known for our warm hospitality to visitors, local of foreign. We're also known to have close family ties and dedication to work. That's why some countries that export labor prefer Filipinos.

Back to DIY, if you have $1 here, you can have 220 1/4w resistors. That's how bad (for us) the foreign exhacnge here. P56 = $1

thanks for the education.  I didnt realize there were that many islands.  that probably makes for a lot of interesting situations with the government and everything with so much water sepparating everyone....

if anyone can get ahold of crawler tell him to PM me, I have 7 j201s that im not using....  I can also place a few on my next order if some of you other guys want some, and send them to you for sampling.  If i buy 100 of them, i can get them for $0.10 each.  I have a new design that i am working on that uses them, so i will eventually use them up. :D   In the mean time i can spread some happieness arround the world.

How nice. :P  That's what I really like about this forum. People are more than helpful enough. Aside from providing valuable tips and info, some go even beyond teaching and start giving out parts even from other parts of the world.

As far as I know crawler can easily source out the J202 (not the j201) in his place. I hope aside from him, I can get just 5 j201, enough to build one of ROG amp emulations. The place where I can buy the j202 is very far from my place. I just bought 2 of it and now sits on 2 buffer.

well if i send you 5 then i wont have many left for crawler....  but i will order some in... probably the middle of next month.

This forum, and its members have been extreemly helpful to me.  I'm glad to help.  I make a little money selling my pedals (well very little actually) so i figure i should give back when i can.

I'm located in Novaliches, Quezon City (closer to Edsa than Nova Bayan).

Have been lurking here for quite some time now (~6 months) and built a few boxes from ggg and tonepad.  am yet to build a rog box, though, because of those elusive jfets.
