i have a question:

can you take a 386 chip and solder it on top of another for a beefed
up little gem?  you would solder pin 1 of the top chip, to pin 1 on the
bottom chip....and pin 2 to pin2, etc.....

would this work?

Might be worth a try, I build a 2 into 1 socket/perf  arrangement after burning some chips trying to solder them together...very easy to heat damage chips by touching a hot iron to the pin.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

yeah, you've got to be quick....

i wonder if this would work though?

You get the machine pin sockets (not the ones from radio shack) and you can get two into one socket without any soldering. I did that on mine, it increases the output a little.

For a beefed up little gem tho, MkII or the Ruby is a better way to go.

Have fun
