I know the big thing is the JFet amp sims right now, but I've ordered some 4049 hex inverters so I can try a Double D. I've not been able to find much info on whether they were liked or disliked. Could somebody give me a bit of input on how they like it or not?

I'd especially like to know how it compares to the Thundercheif.

Thanks in advance.

I've got teh Double D board lying right here. I guess I should wire it up sometime as soon as I find a suitable box for it 8)
I don't like Holland. Nobody has the transistors I want.

If you didn't like one or another side of the Double D, I'll bet you could get it to a place you liked through a few component changes and that could be done fairly easily. The 4049UB has some knock-out tone capability.

Damping the highs early and often makes for a much smoother sound.

IMHO, as with tube circuits, it helps to keep two stages as the maximum per power supply tap. If you have a three stage design and you use a second 4049 with a small RC filter between the Vdd on the two chips you end up with better "richness" to the sound for lack of a better way to describe it. You also get less feedback junk with three and four stage designs and two chips. :D Unused inverters should be tied low or high to minimize power dissipation.

Learn from the tube circuits here. :D

Best of luck on your build. :D

Hey Ricky,
I've spent alot of time with that chip.
It's my favorite chip for OD but from real time "taste test" type experience with local players here whose playing I respect it seems to consistently lose out to the tried and true TS circuit with the run of the mill feedback loop tweeks and the JRC4558D chip.
I'd say 7 out of 10 prefer that cliched soft clipped mid humped "smooth" sound of the TS family. They tend to be strat/tele/fender clean blues oriented players and I always feel like  a used car salesman trying to move what's considered the "clunkers" off the lot when I try to get them to give the 4049 a shot. It seems like the 4558 is just a safer, more familiar sound that a lot of these guys just feel more comfortable with. The HiWatt/SoundCity/Les Paul guys are a little more receptive to the 4049 as well as the other-than-4558 TS circuit ICs (like the 5532 and the Burr Browns) with symmetrically clipping LEDs.

Both 4049 circuits at ROG are two of my personal favorites. As I remember I borrowed heavily from Tim E's work too as well as the original TSF. I'm not too interested in (and I know only very little about) the Red Llama or the JFET emulations so I can't speak about these.

I think there's a monster lurking somewhere inside the 4049 but I don't have the magic cookie it's going to take to lure him out.

My 'bread & butter' distortion pedal is my Boss SD-1/808 with a Burr-Brown chip in it. It's the bomb. I doubt there's a better OD in existence.

That said, I'm looking for another flavor, which resulted in my HMP experiment which I'm happy with, but is a very 'METAL' sounding pedal, which means I can turn it on here and there, for parts that need that tone.

I'm looking for another 'bedrock' sort of sound, one you can 'hang your hat on', 'put your feet up' and 'set a spell'. I know this probably sounds silly, but I play every Friday & Saturday of my life, and I need another tone that I'm going to be able to spend a LOT of time with. I also want a 'rock' sort of sound, more than something light and bluesy.

I'm willing to put some time in developing another pedal, but I'm just trying to figure out which sort of direction to go. The CMOS angle is one I've not tried yet. If what I'm searching for is already out there, I'd love it, cause I'm a much better player than EE(not a large leap).

So...my actual question here is: "Has anyone built a Double D and used it in a gigging situation happily?

Oh, for crying out loud...you mean we're actually supposed to play these things - and live at that?

And to think that all this time I've been building them and then tossing them under the bed.

I have one fully functionable with on board 4066 switching with leds. I have separated the pre and post vol. for more control over of the sound. I agree this one deserves more time for modding. I am probaly going to go back and dothis one again and include notches [maybe a couple of presets per channel. A full rack space  with floor switching capabilities would compliment it.I dont think it would take to much to make this one a self contained analog type unit. I spent some time with this circuit and finally got tired of it and had to commit it to a box. But upon reading your post it has got me interested again. I keep thinking that somehow an fet emulation would somehow find its way into this equation and come up with a killer comb. I cant help you with live situation though I am one of those not ready for primetime players. But the possibilities  with this pedal do exist. If your interstested in pedal comb. used with this I have done that also.
