http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/blackice.htm i want to try this out. I just opened my guitar for the first time. and if this does work. which tone would i solder it on to? the middle knob had a green transistor so could i just replace that with diodes? wich diodes? I want some like from Rs because i need to get my guitar together fast. But i dont want it to sound crappy. i want it to sound like a true distortion pedal (well as close as u can get.) SO LMK what u guys think
Thanx

Replace the cap on the tone pot of the pickup you want the overdrive on. It won't make you sound like you have a DS-1 under the hood though.

Do a search on this, it has been discussed before.

As for true distortion: it will sound like diode clipping. Nothing more, but maybe something less.

Your p/u's need to have sufficient output to clip the diodes without any amplification.

Ge and Schottky diodes have the lowest clipping threshholds.

Barring crazy pickups (or active electronics, which should make the whole thing moot), normal silicon diodes will not work.

so would i just be waistin my time doing this? I have an electra distortion i made a while back. Would it sound like this? would the pot on the box and the tone pot in guitar be doing the same thing? (i dont use the tone pots anyways.) What should i search under too?

Also i have a humbuker , single , humbuker pickups with a 5 way switch.

HB's should have enough output.  It's a simple mod, two diodes soldered in place of your tone cap.  If you don't like it, take a few seconds and change back.

"Black ice" is the trade name.  It will likely appear in every thread about this mod.  A search for "ice" will bring in the relevant threads, as the bling is rarely mentioned here.

ok i think ill just try it. what the heck. But if i was to goto RS what would be the best diode to get?

1N34A, if RS has 'em, would work. This is a Ge diode.
I don't think they even have one kind of schottky diode in their stores.
