Does the thunderchief live up to the hype?

Is this worthy of a build to emulate the marshall sound or is all the hype just that, hype?
It's people like us who contribute to dead fx pedals selling on eBay for what they'd cost new!

Breadboard it and find out for yourself.  No one else's opinion will serve you as well as your own ears.

Hype?

I can't say I've seen anything that I would describe as hype, but if you want a sample of the sound just check out the sample at Runoffgroove. It won't sound exactly like a Marshall but remember that some of that tonal recipe is from the speakers as with any amp. Your computer speakers won't be able to do any amp sim device any real justice. From what I've heard.... the sound is very Marshally in any case.

Give it a build and see how you like it. The sample sounds great to me.

Take care,

It's mostly hype...  We make lots of money off these designs.  Hype is essential in marketing.

Yeah.  In fact a lot of people don't realize that Gary actually posts compliments to himself under a variety of pseudonyms.

The part I don't get, though, is how he keeps posting build problems to himself and then answering them.  Weird.

Actually, we started this thread just so people would defend us.  Over 93% of the names on this forum's member list are pseudonyms that Gary and I use regularly.

I try not to respond to hype, so for me, the logical answer to your original question would be: "no"...but you might find someone who would answer you differently, and being percieved as a 'hyper'.
So in essence,  any answer given should first be seen as being moot.
No objective response can be given under that context, it is too general, and predisposed to negativity].  Results may vary...
That said, you still may be able to slip in a simple whoops that works.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

There are so many pedals out that they people have made that "sound like a Marshall". I'm not kidding.

Seems like everything sounds like a Marshall!

In any case, the schematic looks well designed and the samples sound good, so go for it and find out for yourself!

That's the reward!

javacody

I think brian and gary are secretly JFET salesman, as so many of their pedals use JFETs, that is of course in addition to the 5300 different accounts they have at this forum.  ;)

I'm working on a design that sounds like a Peavey!

Runoff groove are just big-money corporate SWINE!!!

Boss and DOD aren't the enemy... RUNOFFGROOVE ARE!!

I say we buy all their pedals and reverse engineer them so we can swap schematics... then we can make layouts for them!... muahahahaha!!!

Hey RDV,
When you get it just right send me a copy down here in Texas, they don't make anything down here that quite has that type of tone.

If you can make it sound like a Classic 50, then it'll certainly be worth building. Really good-sounding amp, I'm serious :D

I used to have one of those. I ran it together with a Peavey Bandit 65 in stereo. I'm serious. I traded it for a Marshall which I still have. The Classic started to feedback when it was on standby. Really.

I've also probably got the record for # of hours on the same set of EL34s. I've had the Marshall 10+ years gigging at least 80% of weekends without replacing the tubes. Truly a tank. A workhorse.

The Classic Series are damn good amps for the money though, mine got dropped/thrown a few times
