For £15 landed, they are really good. 4 cable jobs should allow me to coil split but I've not bothered up to now

I'm looking for a schematic for Guyatone Fuzz Monster. Found a thread here at forum, but images are dead :(
But digi2t wrote that he had a pcb for sale. Have you looked at the build documents at his website?

I don't have any boards for sale. The original boards were designed by UKToecutter, but Andy's dropped out of the pedal game now. Maybe Phil and I can whip something up in the new year.

In the meantime, here's old build doc, which also includes the schematic;

Man, I kept having issues with this one. Drilled the holes on the wrong side of the tone knob, rocked it before boxing and then wouldn't work in the box. I usually use LED bezels but wanted a cleaner look here. Found that the LEDs from tayda had the anode exposed on the side and was shorting to the side of the hole that was drilled. It was shorting my 9V to ground. Added some super glue to seal the edge. Now, no more issues. Epoxied the holes drilled on the wrong side of the tone knob. One of my first using the molex connector. Easy in and out of the pcb if there are any issues.

It's a DS-1 and the name is a play on the name of the DS-1 but in reverse. Could be the SD-1 too though. I've been doing the name play thing for a while for some reason. Seeing Eye and Ultra mod, or whatever. Been a while since finishing one.

What is with the red electros?

Does that happen to be an EleCrow PCB?

I used to really be with it!  That is, until they changed what "it" is.  Now, I can't find it.  And, I'm scared!  --  Homer Simpson's dad

They are Wurth brand, which I think is a German owned company. They are very reasonably priced and I think I found them on mouser.

It is an Elecrow PCB. ;)

Finally finished up the 2nd one of these.

9mm pots have been in scarce supply lately.

Really a fun build-- and this thing sounds huge.  Lots of control to the tone and gain.

Thanks again Dino!

You're lucky it works at all, your 4558s are fake.

italianguy63

They're old... probably Tayda.  Bought them like 4 or 5 years ago.

(Sounds great!)

JRC 4558s have always looked the same, or at least since the early 80s.  They have the circlular indentation by pin 1, not the half-circle at the end.  "JRC" is right-justified, and "4558D" is not.  "JRC" is a bolder font than the other characters.  The only thing that's changed over the years is that the date/mfr code has gone from four characters to five.

Search here for "fake 4558" and you'll see a number of them with the 0058T code.  Since your pedal works, you must've scored some kind of working dual opamps, but they're not JRCs.  Maybe some other brand of 4558, I don't know.  There are threads here where folks have malfunctioning builds (noisy, bad sound) using 0058T coded chips.  I guess whoever's stamping those fakes is using a variety of chips.

Here's a pic from a 1980 Tube Screamer:

Here's a more recent one:

Here's a fake from Alibaba, also with the 0058T code:

Gotcha--

I recall that Tayda offered several different variants of the 4558.  I remember I just bought the most expensive one hoping for good luck.  I probably bought 10 of them in the day.. and I have done several builds with them.  Never had an issue.

I probably just got a good batch.

The pedal has no noise or bad habits.  It has a great fuzz tone, and if you crank it-- it has TONS of gain.  Mild to very wooley.

I think I still have 2 or 3 left.

Edit-- looked in the parts drawer... Yep!  Still have the parts bag.

I bought 21 of them from Tayda under part# A-1127, NJM4558

I have precisely 1 (one) 4558D JRC, and it looks same as Mark's, with the band of texture on the top [and bottom]. date code? 0058T. but - this is a pull, with trimmed pins, from what I can't remember, possibly an Ibanez pedal, possibly some shite karaoke machine. it is so faintly laser etched as to be almost invisible.

Well that's bizarre.  But dollars to donuts it was the karaoke machine.

Wow, now that's how you heatsink Ge diodes!

That's a lost Japanese technique. It was found in many of the Univox Superfuzz models. Other models had them soldered straight in. I guess it all depended on who was putting them together that day.
